Charged with a Drug Offence? Is Your Lawyer an Accredited Specialist?

Are you one of the lucky few heading to Beat the Drum tonight?

The sold-out festival is due to kick off in Sydney’s Domain shortly and will celebrate 40 years of Australia’s popular public radio station, Triple J.

With prominent artists such as Vance Joy, The Preatures and the Hilltop Hoods headlining the event, it’s sure to draw a strong crowd.

But as always with these types of festivals, there’s sure to be a strong police presence, and it’s inevitable that there will be a number of arrests for drug offences.

Possession of ecstasy is usually the most common charge to be laid by police at music festivals.

However, if you do end up in trouble, it’s not the end of the world.

An Accredited Specialist Lawyer can provide you with the most positive outcome in your case, including getting the case thrown out or helping you to avoid a criminal record.

What’s an Accredited Specialist?

When it comes to fighting your drug case, it’s only natural to want the best lawyer out there.

Having a specialist drug lawyer on your side can certainly give you a leading advantage when it comes to securing the best possible outcome.

But with the legal services market growing ever more competitive – and many firms now advertising on the internet, radio and in print – it can be difficult to know how to pick the very best.

Of course, you can always look at a firm’s reviews, testimonials and results which are published on their websites.

However, perhaps the best way to tell if a lawyer is outstanding is to take a couple of minutes to check whether they are an Accredited Specialist.

You might think that all lawyers are Accredited Specialists of some sort, but this is certainly not the case.

Only a small percentage of all lawyers in NSW have been recognised by the Law Society of NSW as Accredited Specialists.

The Accredited Specialist scheme is run by the Law Society and is a means for the public to identify exceptional lawyers with considerable experience in a specific field of law -such as criminal law or family law.

An Accredited Specialist is therefore one who has been recognised and certified as an expert.

To become an Accredited Specialist, a lawyer must have at least 5 years experience in a particular field of law.

They will then need to go through a rigorous testing procedure – which includes being assessed by magistrates and judges to test their courtroom skills and knowledge.

Furthermore, to stay accredited, a lawyer must continuously update and upgrade their knowledge and skills.

Accreditation therefore requires dedication and hard work on the part of the lawyer – as well as a demonstrated track record of experience and legal knowledge.

How Can I Tell if a Lawyer is an Accredited Specialist?

Lawyers who are Accredited Specialists are allowed to use the words ‘Accredited Specialist’ in the particular area of law after their name – for example, on business cards, advertising material and firm documents.

If you’re thinking about hiring a lawyer and you want to know whether they are an Accredited Specialist, you can also perform a search on the Law Society website.

Simply click here to use the ‘Find a Lawyer’ search on the website,.

If they are an Accredited Specialist, the website will state this at the top and specify the area of specialisation – eg ‘Criminal Law’

You can also use ‘Find a Lawyer’ to find Accredited Specialists in a particular field by selecting the relevant area of law (eg criminal law) and a suburb close to you.

This will list all the Accredited Specialists in that field in your chosen suburb.

How Can an Accredited Specialist Help Me?

Because Accredited Specialists are recognised by the legal profession as experts, you can rest assured that they have the experience necessary to secure the best possible outcome in your matter.

You can also count on them to have an up-to-date knowledge of the law, because they are required to continually attend lectures and training courses to retain their accreditation.

Furthermore, because Accredited Specialists are assessed by their peers, they are often highly respected by judges and magistrates in the courtroom.

All of these factors can give you a cutting-edge in securing the best outcome in your case.
